Performing Arts Program - Montpellier Primary School

At Montpellier Primary School, all students from Prep to Grade 6 have the privilege of undertaking a Performing Arts Program once a week throughout the entire year. The three areas focused on are Dance, Music, and Drama. Each Performing Arts lesson upholds the skills of "Perform, Explore, Create".

In Dance, students are taught choreography that they practice, rehearse, and perform weekly in independent, small, and whole-class groups. They develop body awareness, technical and expressive skills, as well as aesthetic, artistic, and cultural understandings. Students learn known dance moves and create their own choreography using the knowledge they have obtained. This program allows students to gain confidence to perform in front of an audience and express their ideas respectfully and creatively.

In Music, students develop their skills with a range of instruments including the keyboard, ukulele, and percussion. They are taught the principles and elements of music such as sound, rhythm, melody, harmony, pitch, form, timbre, silence, and structure, while building musical vocabulary. Students learn technical skills and are able to read and play music individually, in groups, or as a class. They explore chord progressions and apply this knowledge to create their own music, becoming confident, innovative, and skilled musicians.

In Drama, students learn to be expressive and explore personal, cultural, and social worlds through roles and scenarios that engage, entertain, and challenge. They perform known scripts and create original settings, characters, and dialogue. This education helps students become confident, thoughtful learners with an understanding of traditional and contemporary drama.
