Montpellier is aware of the importance of influencing children to adopt positive, long-term attitudes towards Physical activity.
We offer a comprehensive course that allows children to participate at their own level of competency, facilitating progression to the highest level possible for those children gifted in this area.
Every grade level participates in a 45 minute Physical Education lesson each week involving fitness, ball handling, gymnastics, athletics, minor and major games throughout the year.
Preps participate in the Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) which involves the children developing their fine and gross motor skills.
Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 children also participate in a one hour Sport Session involving learning the skills of Athletics and rules of major games. In Grade 5 and 6 they compete against other schools in our district (Geelong College, Christian College and Kardinia International College) in interschool sport in football, netball, basketball, soccer, tee ball, cricket and volleystars.
We are proud of our new high quality artificial turf which ensures the children can use the oval in all seasons. Each day children run around our running track to improve their fitness in readiness for the Cross Country which is held in the school grounds in Term 1. Children compete for their house and for the older children a chance to progress on to the next stage.
In Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics all children have the opportunity to progress through District, Zone, Regional and State competitions. Children can also individually trial for State teams in Netball, Football, Hockey, Soccer and Basketball. Over the years Montpellier has had many State representatives who are displayed in our foyer.
School teams also can progress through the levels to State. In 2002 The Montpellier Netball teams won the State Championship.
We have an extremely well stocked Physical Education equipment shed for use during Physical Education and Sport sessions.
Gymnastics and Swimming is outsourced using local venues. The YMCA in Newtown is used for 4 one hour gymnastics sessions and the Geelong Aquatic Centre for a two week intensive swimming program.
Jump Rope For Heart, a National Heart Foundation skipping program is also included in our Physical Education Program.
A new full basketball court size Gymnasium will be completed in early 2010 to enhance our Physical Education Program.
