Performing Arts

Performing Arts build confidence, self discipline and communication skills and are an important aspect of the Montpellier Curriculum.

We provide an exciting curriculum allowing the children to explore, strengthen and value their experience.  Our program involves all aspects of performing including singing, drama and dance.

The children in Grades Prep, 1 and 2 experience the joy of music in all forms with Mr. Dandy.  Through movement and singing the children develop a love of the Performing Arts.

The experiences for the upper grades are more diverse.    Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 develop:

  • Circus skills of juggling, diablo and spinning plates through the Circus Unit.
  • Acting skills through the Drama unit where they perform plays and participate in Drama games.
  • Dance skills through learning a group dance and social dances
  • Enthusiasm for singing and actions through singing songs from the ABC Sing Book with Mrs. Browne.

The children are able to consolidate and perform the skills they learn through:

DANCE EXTRAVAGANZA

A night where the entire family can come along and join in!

Held at the KD Stewart Centre at Deakin University each grade level performs a group dance, either bush dance, old time, line dance etc, with parents joining in to  dance with their own child. Social dances like the Nutbush, the 5,6,7 and 8, Hokey Pokey and Heel Toe Polka to name a few are performed by the whole school community.

CONCERT SPECTACULAR

To culminate the highly successful Performing Arts program each grade learns and performs an item associated to a theme.  Some themes have been Montpellier Musicals – Oklahoma, Wizard of Oz, Battle of the Bands – The Beatles, The Beach Boys, ABBA to name a few.  Children learn to sing the songs and perform actions and movements in fantastic costumes on the big stage at the Arena in December.

TALENT QUEST

The Student Council run this very popular event for the children.  Children can perform any item they wish – skipping, singing, playing an instrument etc.  Children go through an audition process and approximately 20 acts are selected by the students to perform in front of their peers.  Please see link.

BUSKERS DAY

Any child can busk in the school grounds during lunchtime and other children can support them by placing 5c pieces in their hats.  All money raised goes to our Social Service collection.  Acts are diverse with children demonstrating  magic tricks, joke telling etc...  Certainly a favourite with the children.  Please see link.

LEARNING A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT

Parents are given the opportunity for their children to learn a musical instrument at the school,  outside of school hours.  Please see link.
