At Montpellier Primary, the French Language is taught to every child in the school, thus preparing the students for their Language Studies in their Secondary schooling. Indeed, in recognition of the importance of language study, Victorian secondary students receive a bonus towards their VCE ENTER for a successful completion of an accredited language; French being one of these.
Learning a language has been shown to have many benefits, including enhancing creativity, confidence, problem-solving and literacy skills, whilst significantly encouraging cultural awareness.
The French curriculum is organised through themes and topics which are arranged to provide progressive and cumulative opportunities for students to develop language and cultural understandings. The sequencing of activities and language content allows learners to build new skills, knowledge and attitudes on the levels they have already attained.
Montpellier students are engaged in a varied program, which includes: listening, speaking, reading and writing activities. The majority of the lesson time is devoted to oral tasks, which ensures that all children are actively participating and therefore consolidating their French skills. Topics vary throughout the school, but most age groups practise: numbers, colours, days/months, meeting and greeting vocabulary.
Every second year a French Day is held, where the staff and children come to school dressed in a French theme and participate in a variety of activities. These include a Parade, a performance by native speakers, a traditional French lunch and classroom games.
As directed by DEECD, reporting begins at Grade 5 level with children being assessed against Victorian Essential Learning Standards. (VELS)
