Assessment for improved student learning and deep understanding requires a range of assessment practices to be used with three overarching purposes:
Assessment FOR learning - occurs when teachers use inferences about student progress to inform their teaching
Assessment AS learning - occurs when students reflect on and monitor their progress to inform their future learning goals
Assessment OF learning - occurs when teachers use evidence of student learning to make judgements on student achievement against goals and standards.
Assessment serves as a developmental activity aimed at improving student learning. The school uses variety of assessment methods to provide teachers with evidence of what students know and can do and to identify particular strengths and weaknesses. Teachers then use this information to guide their planning and teaching and cater for individual student needs. It is also used to report to parents on how far their child has progressed during the year, where they are compared to the relevant standards and what the student, the parent and the teacher need do to improve the student's performance.
Students who are identified as needing a modified program, at either the higher or lower end of the academic scale, have specific learning plans developed for them. They are tracked throughout the year to ensure appropriate progress is being made.
Students receive verbal and written feedback on their learning and progress. Our assessment methods also provide students and staff with opportunities to reflect on their practice and their learning overall. All students conduct midyear interviews to inform their parents about their learning progress and future learning goals.
